Overview of semiconductor processing technology

When we say semiconductors, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most of the time we think about computer chips and transistors, but it’s not as simple as it seems. For us to be able to get a basic understanding of the process of manufacturing semiconductors, we need to understand what a semiconductor is and what its role is in all the technology that surrounds us every day.

As defined in the Oxford English Dictionary, “a semiconductor is a solid substance that has conductivity between that of an insulator and that of most metals, either due to addition of an impurity or because of temperature effects. Devices made of semiconductors, notably silicon, are essential components of most electronics circuits”. Here is an example to help us get a better understanding of what a semiconductor is.
